I would just put some shelf liner down on a tray and lay out full circles of each kind for a while. You will use the fraction circles in elementary too, so buying the metal ones won't be a waste. My Boys' Teacherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16814627526655717162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-60994812152337036572013-11-24T17:46:16.084-08:002013-11-24T17:46:16.084-08:00You know, we have always treated "hate" ...You know, we have always treated "hate" as a bad word as well, so it was surprising to me when he started saying it relating to school! He does mix it up though, with "Do we have to do this?" and "Can we stop now?" I always feel so let down when I have to resort to whatever our current "fun currency" is, but honestly, I feel better knowing that you do it too! The crazy thing is, he'll complain about something 2 seconds after he asks to do more of it!

I like the idea of making it every day, just so that it becomes the norm. Also, when we travel it really messes us up! It's hard for him (and me) to get going when we come home. So when we travel in the next few months, we'll be taking some school along with us!

We ended up leaving CC a few weeks ago. It wasn't adding to our school routine at home and was a big time sink. Link is NOT a singer, so he would not participate in any of the songs. It was all I could do just to get him to stand with the other kids while they sang. He said the only part he liked was doing the maps, and I've got that covered at home! He really looked forward to eating lunch and playing with the other kids. So we spent 4 hours there just so he could play at the end. For us, it wasn't worth it. So I don't have that excuse :) I focus on the Montessori Math and pre-reading along with the LoE.

We do however, still join our Charlotte Mason co-op once a week. I'm not starting the CM reading for him until next year, but I don't think it will add too much for us. Link does love to be read to, and I think he'll do will with the CM curriculum. Plus, we all LOVE the community we have with that group.Melhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-38829196077119250562013-11-24T17:35:37.769-08:002013-11-24T17:35:37.769-08:00Thanks, that's reassuring :) We took a little...Thanks, that's reassuring :) We took a little break for a few days and it seems like every time we do that, when we come back to it, it isn't so bad. He still needs a lot of practice, but I alternate with the operations to keep it from getting too old. He reads the numbers well while we do the operations work when he uses the "five tens, 2 units" way. I do point out the name, but I don't pressure him into remembering it. Melhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-67761944411046579202013-11-24T17:31:37.616-08:002013-11-24T17:31:37.616-08:00I'm glad to hear that there will be more use o...I'm glad to hear that there will be more use of the beads in elementary. I guess I should have figured that, I just haven't gotten to the elementary level yet :)

I thought about getting just those cut-out labeled fraction circles, but I was a little afraid of missing the visualization of the full circle. I do like this geometric board, which is sorta like the protractor you linked. http://www.adenamontessori.us/details.php?did=1455
It's $22 instead of $56. It's not that I mind spending the extra on the metal fractions, I'm just not sure how much more use we'd get out of them as opposed to the cut-out ones. (our metal insets are hardly ever used.) I could get the cut-out circles and the geometric board for the same price as the metal set, and I think they'd be more useful. Anyways, it sounds like maybe I've got a good list this time and I should be good until we enter elementary...? I don't know how much Adena's prices fluctuate, but I'm tempted to go ahead and order while they are cheaper than IFIT. Thanks for your input, it is always appreciated!Melhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-16810300324435045062013-11-24T12:53:07.811-08:002013-11-24T12:53:07.811-08:00Sounds like you're handling it just fine. AND...Sounds like you're handling it just fine. AND you found one work, the Logic of English, that he likes to do everyday without complaint. My advice is to make him do ONE math every day...even on weekends maybe? Until he stops complaining. Sometimes it is easier to get them over complaining if something happens every day without exception. Also, our kids aren't allowed to use the "hate" word in our house :) Yes, they have learned it from other kids/relatives. But, it's right up there with swearing. SOoo, they have to be a lot more creative when they want to complain. I think "I hate this" is just something people say. If you take it out of the vocabulary kids tend to NOT replace it with saying just "I don't like this" because it's just not "something people say."

It sounds like Legos might be his "currency." You *could" have a "no Legos until after school" policy. If my kids say, "Mom, can we watch a Power Rangers?" It's really easy to say, "Yes! As soon as you've done X." If he will literally disobey you and go play with Legos anyway (which my kids wouldn't, but they are all different) then, yes, you may have to put them away.

Of course as you know I'm biased. Almost all of our toys ARE put away anyway (toy library).

Do you work on the CC work daily as well? I have the iPad apps and friends who do the program. I am trying (poorly) to add the songs to our curriculum. However, I'm finding it too much. If you are doing a good job with the CC I think you have to cut yourself some slack on the Montessori. You can't do everything. My Boys' Teacherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16814627526655717162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-56241722253005960552013-11-24T12:42:07.684-08:002013-11-24T12:42:07.684-08:00I think the nice thing about Montessori math at th...I think the nice thing about Montessori math at this stage is that it doesn't matter. It is at this point that the sequence splits from just "math" to "operations" and "linear counting." You can keep him right where he is using beads and boards for as long as he needs with no pressure to move on to counting chains yet. At the same time he can continue all of his operations work because it is better if he says "3 thousands, 4 hundreds, five tens, and 2 units" anyway. Some albums specifically mention trying to read the numbers the other way around the time they get to the large bead frame. So, you have a lot of wiggle room there. Just continue the operations work the other way.My Boys' Teacherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16814627526655717162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-62707135935004241252013-11-24T12:30:23.461-08:002013-11-24T12:30:23.461-08:00I never used the control chart for my 100 board. ...I never used the control chart for my 100 board. But it's only $2 so why not, right?

We use our bead chains A LOT. It's more than just the skip counting, but rather the concept of squaring and cubing that will play big in elementary. Don't forget, you are also getting all of the colored squares and cubes with that and you'll use those a lot in elementary too.

The decanomial bead bar box is used for the first memorization of multiplication work. It is used a ton right from the outset of elementary as well.

My advice is to NOT get the metal fraction circles if your budget is truly tight. As soon as you are doing mixed fractions you need more pieces than the circles provide and you will be buying:

http://www.montessoriequipment.com/Cut-Out-Labeled-Fraction-Circles-1-to-1-10-p/m.190.1.htm

You can do all of the fraction work with these if you want. It just won't be a slick...you won't be able to trace the triangles...you won't have them in "a circle" when you do the equivalence work. You could stick them in your Montessori protractor if you have one:

http://www.montessoriequipment.com/product-p/m.201.1.htm

The squares divided into triangles (fractions) could be done with a printable. I think I'm going to use them later in elementary but haven't gotten that far yet.

I want to warn you. There is a recent thread on Playschool6 in which several people are reporting unusable materials and poor customer service from iFit. I've done business with them ten times or so with NO PROBLEM and several other say the same. However, there is a chance they have new management or new ownership or something. Someone reported beads missing off of their new bead frames and the customer service saying "you get what you pay for." Don' t know if it's true or not, but you should know.
My Boys' Teacherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16814627526655717162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-88746887388567510612013-10-05T04:52:46.786-07:002013-10-05T04:52:46.786-07:00Thank you so much for your encouraging words!Thank you so much for your encouraging words!Melhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-29007551616564275982013-10-04T17:18:38.568-07:002013-10-04T17:18:38.568-07:00I just found your blog and I love what I see here!...I just found your blog and I love what I see here! My husband is now used to my occasional melt down where I develop a plan to sell all of our materials and enroll the kids anyplace that will take them. It's a daily challenge. I used to work as an IT professional and some days I really miss my job. It's worth it but I constantly battle keeping my perspective.

I think you're doing all the right things. It takes times for the littles to adjust too. I'm not sure how much you've read about normalization with Montessori but I think it applies here. My oldest, who is also experiencing her kindergarten year, is so hit or miss. I came to the point where I would give myself presentations because she didn't want to join me when I invited her. She slowly starting joining me for some. On other occasions I'm just practicing what's in my albums alone. :-)

You will find your rhythm but it will take time.
