Link and Bumblebee are going to a Montessori school from 8:30 to 3:30 every day. While I miss them terribly and feel left in the dark about their school, it has been nice having more time for my two baby bugs :) Anyone wonder why?

Well, in a nutshell, my husband changed jobs. The long story is we are moving out of state, currently in a hotel, and now have access to at least 5 Montessori schools. I couldn't homeschool in a hotel, no matter how big it is.

It's going great though! I knew there was a reason I thought Montessori was so great. I'm finally FULLY experiencing it. Oh, we had our moments at home. Both boys were reading when they started, doing some math, and other things. But now they are so much more independent in their work.

Link is THRIVING with the older kids. He wants to practice his reading and writing at home. He likes doing the big work, especially when an older kid works with him. Its a great environment for him. It has cemented in my husband and I what we were pretty sure of before - Link needs Montessori! I would not put him in a normal school, public or private. I would either homeschool with Montessori (with extra group meetings) or do Montessori private school.

Bumblebee is busy busy bee as well. He wasn't having the difficulties at home that I was having with Link. He was just being neglected because he's four and Link is six, and I felt like I needed to focus on Link. His reading is really progressing. But, he can't really remember what he does as school, so all I have to go on is what he brings home.

If we end up moving, I'm still planning on homeschooling. If we stay... I don't know. I really, really like their school. So we'll see.
We have a lot going on here lately, so I won't be posting for a while. In addition to being up a good bit of the night with this sweet girl, holding her most of the day, trying to get outside to enjoy the weather and keeping the boys out of trouble, we're also getting ready to move. (Notice I didn't say anything about school time!) I'll catch back up in August.... maybe :)

Melhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-77134395585619152542014-02-16T08:54:00.002-08:002014-02-16T08:54:48.344-08:00Kodály Method for Teaching MusicI would like for Link to have some additional music education. The Key's of the Universe album that I have covers the bells and music notation very well. However, I wanted more for singing, rhythm and movement instruction.

Link seems to have an aversion to music! So I don't want to jump right into formal music education. I'm going to have to start small. Kodály so far seems to be a great fit.

This post is really about me taking some notes from The Kodály Method by Lois Choksy, which I checked out from the library. I was debating purchasing the newer version, The Kodály Method I, which is supposed to include monthly and yearly plans for each grade level. For now, the library version does the trick, but I need some notes for when I take it back :) I'm only focusing on Grade One.

The author first notes that if a child has not learned the concepts normally taught in the Hungarian Nursery School, they should be taught first, regardless if the child is now 6 years old, in the first grade. Those concepts are:

"in-tune singing, feeling for beat and accent in duple meter, ability to identify rhythm patterns of familiar songs and to step and clap rhythm and beat, as well as the understanding of the concepts of high-low, loud-soft, and fast-slow. In addition, it is necessary to build a repertory of songs and singing games of small range and easy rhythms from which to draw the later skill-teaching material."

Two nursery rhymes that are recommended for teaching duple meter and for later deriving rhythm pattern and accent are Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater and Baa, Baa, Black Sheep. At some point in the book I read that only the best teachers should teach music. I should note here that I have no idea what teaching duple meter is and I personally don't know how to sing in-tune. I hope I don't mess this up! Maybe I'll learn along with the kids :)

The activities suggested for use with these rhymes are to "aid in the development of a rhythmic sense as well as of inner hearing and concentration." They are as follows, in increasing difficulty:

say these in rhythm

step the beat

clap the rhythm (the way the words go)

play the rhythm on hand drum or rhythm sticks while stepping the beat

clap the rhythm while thinking the words but not saying them aloud

The next part is where I have difficulty. In-tune singing is taught concurrently with rhythm and beat. I don't think I could teach using the first method mentioned, since I wouldn't know in-tune from out-of-tune. Here's the good part - "The earliest material used for teaching children to sing accurately and in tune should be authentic children's singing games and fold music of the proper ambit..." Horray! I can start there :) Then we'll add to that by performing them in different ways to teach high and low, soft and loud, and fast and slow. The author suggests that half of a school year should be devoted to building this repertory of basic teaching songs. Only then should one move into the teaching sequence.

I'm going to stop there. I'll check the book back out in 6 months or so, when we've mastered some songs. Its sad that we haven't included this in our day to day so far. You can probably tell I'm not a very musical person myself. I like to listen to music, I appreciate it, I just don't have any skill. I want to make sure that my boys have more opportunity than I did :)

There are two resources that I have purchased, but have not yet received. The first is Kodály in Kindergarden by Katinka S. Daniel. Here is the description from Music in Motion:

Curriculum lay-out, 50 lesson plans and 107 songs to establish both musical and language knowledge, instill a love of singing and moving together, give a feeling for aesthetics, develop the body and character.

The other is Learning Basic Skills Through Music by Hap Palmer. This one I will use just to sneak some rhythm work in with music, since Link seems to dislike listening or singing anything. He does like to move! Hopefully these two together will give us something to start with, but I won't really know until I get my hands on them.

I was going to title this post "I Have the Whiniest Kid Ever." Link was so excited when I said "Today you get to use your new bead chains!" We got through counting to about 8, and he said "Mommy, don't you know I don't like school?" After taking turns with him a few times, I couldn't take the whining anymore and I finally just asked if he'd like to put it away. He wanted to know if that meant school was over, but I told him he'd have to choose something or I could choose for him. He chose the binomial cube, knob less cylinders, then he read me a few of his readers from LoE set A (he's on B now). The rest of the day was a struggle. Bumblebee was very interested in the 100 chain!

Baby in the school room!

Later, he mentioned again that he thought the bead chains were going to be fun, but they weren't. After explaining that he would learn to skip count using them, he was interested again (he often tries to skip count, but can't.)

The next day, I let Link choose any color he wanted. He asked for the long chains a few times, but I insisted that he had to show me could do the short ones first. He was going to do them all! He chose 1s, 2s, 3, and 5s.

I caught Bumblebee, who is about to turn four, taking short chains off of the cabinet several times. At first I'd tell him no. Then, when I realized that he was taking each off very carefully and folding it up to compare to the square, I decided to let him. Then he said he wanted to skip count, but sometimes he'd skip numbers. I decided to start him with the teen bead stair since he knows those pretty well, but still needs some work. I'll work through the Group 3 section with him even though he hasn't started Group 2. We finished up Group 1from Meg's album last week with the Memory Game of Numbers. I need to check back with Gettman to see if there is anything that we skipped with Bumblebee. He really gets the short end of the stick! I need to start focusing more on where he is in the periods! I'm not sure he's ready for Group 2, but I may at least introduce it.

You may also notice that there is an almost-two-year-old in the school room! Boy does that make it difficult to stay in one place! Beya has his shelves and really enjoys what is on them. But he also likes to constantly see if he can grab something off of the other shelves. He's only been joining us for the past week or so, so hopefully he'll learn soon and calm down a bit. I have a feeling I'm going to have to start rotating his shelves now too!

This is all getting a little difficult for me to keep track of! Bumblebee has learned all of his letter sounds and some counting, just from being around Link. I haven't really focused on him at all! I haven't even made sound boxes for him! Don't ask me how he learned what he has, I'm amazed :)
To that end, I'm planning out a lesson from BFSU once a week, and hopefully integrating it with my nature study plans.

So I sat down with my BFSU and opened up to the flow chart page. After flipping back and forth from it to various lessons, I decided to search online to see if someone had made something a bit more concise for planning. It took me a while, but I found two great resources and I had to post the two links before I lost them!

First, is a list of the topics in an order that ensure prerequisites have been met. The author of the book is very adamant about NOT creating this list from what I've read on different forums, because he wants to keep flexibility in how they are presented. That's nice, but I'd rather have a schedule I can change than one that is so flexible that I can't follow it! Here's the link to the blog where I found it. At least now I can assign a lesson to a week and easily know what to prepare for ahead of time.

Second, is "Lesson Plans" for each lesson. The order is very similar to the list of topics above, but different since there are various ways to meet the prerequisites. These lesson plans cannot replace the book, but offer a concise plan to follow after the book has been read. It'll make actually doing the lesson a little easier I think. If you want to download this, I suggest using the Google Docs link, rather than clicking on the picture, as it is much simpler to get the file.

Melhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-38723470344755452792013-12-17T12:33:00.000-08:002013-12-17T12:33:53.756-08:00I Love You 100 Board!I know I said I was done for the year, but I just had to express my love for the 100 Board while it was fresh. We've been working on the Ten Boards, but only have the patience to count through about 40. I was pretty sure Link understood, but just didn't have the endurance to continue counting. I decided to introduce the 100 Board and boy am I glad!

At first I used the golden beads to emphasize how we were counting and what happens when we get to the end of a row. Then Link kept saying "I get it now!" and "this is fun!" while he and Bumblebee fought over who got to put the tiles in. I had to change from letting them take turns, to telling Bumblebee that he could work on it after Link was finished. Then Link would explain to me how the numbers changed, and how he saw patterns in the numbers. It was great! I think he can start on the number chains after Christmas!

As a side note, I'm wondering something about my bead cabinet from Adena Montessori. They include the long bead chains, cubes, squares and no short bead chains. Instead, they include individual bead bars. Are those supposed to be in there, or should those have been bead chains instead? So I have five 5 bars, and ten 10 bars, etc. Should I buy some little connectors and connect those into chains? I'm pretty sure that if I needed the bars, I could just use the ones from the Decanomial box.Melhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-31511456804223575892013-12-16T12:06:00.000-08:002013-12-16T12:06:46.430-08:00Reading!This will probably be our last full week of school for the year and I definitely won't be posting for a while. I just wanted to post a quick note about Link's reading. He is doing so well, and we are really enjoying the Logic of English curriculum! He is about to finish the first level and can read (in my untrained, motherly opinion) GREAT! I can't say enough good things about LoE; it has worked so well for us, and it has cut down on my preparation time dramatically! It's so easy compared to my Montessori plan, but is obviously not Montessori. I would have liked for him to be a bit more self-taught, but it just wasn't happening. I will post a movie soon of Link reading his last reader, I'm so proud!!

Happy Holiday's everyone!Melhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-87642646232810997052013-12-10T14:23:00.000-08:002013-12-10T14:23:31.654-08:00Concepts of Energy - DownloadI've started using the book Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding: A Science Curriculum for K-2 with Link. I'm separating the works into the threads that MBT uses: linear counting, operations, memorization, fractions, and story problems/equation formats. I'm also using MBH which is organized similarly to MBT's threads.

So in period five that includes the following works:

Linear Counting
Formation of Complex Numbers (with cards)
Introduction to Teens
Introduction to Tens
Counting - 100 and 1,000 Chains, 100 Board and skip counting

Operations
Collective Exercises (Addition, Subtraction and Multiplication)
Stamps (Addition, Subtraction and Multiplication)
Dots

Fractions
Concept and Quantity

In period six that will include:

Operations
Collective Exercises (Division)
Stamps (Division)

Memorization
Addition and Subtraction Snake Games
Addition and Subtraction Strip Boards
Multiplication Tables
Multiplication Bead Board
Finger Charts

Fractions
Advanced work with Fractions

Period seven:

Memorization
Unit Division Board
Division Charts
Small Bead Frame
Hierarchical Material
Large Bead Frame

Now I just have to figure out what materials I need to purchase to get through these three periods.

Period Five
Already have golden bead material, teen and ten boards, stamps.
Need Counting chains, 100 Board and fraction material.

Period Six
Snake games
Addition and Subtraction Strip Boards
Multiplication Tables
Multiplication Bead Board
Fraction material

Period Seven
Division Board
Division Charts
Small and Large Bead Frames

Hmm. I just configured what MBT says is the minimum bead material, but I'm not exactly sure what those things are used for. I'm assuming that the first three items in the list will cover counting chains and snake games. It just seems like a lot for just those works, but I know they have extensions as well.

Here is what I'm looking at from IFIT for $596, free shipping. (If I just do Periods five and six, its $510, so I might as well get Period Seven while I'm at it.)
Adena, Montessori Outlet and Alison's were all about $650, but Adena includes a cabinet. So I could save $188 at Adena.

This does not include any of the fraction material. It's so expensive! I'm not exactly sure what I need for fractions. It seems like I could get away with just the metal fraction circles for $56 from Adena. ($85 from IFIT, but I hear IFIT's are better quality.)

Since I'm a little ahead of the game this time, I don't have to rush into buying anything. I'll probably wait until the new year to do this purchase. Melhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-47163918409837060772013-11-23T05:43:00.000-08:002013-11-23T05:43:48.573-08:00More Math Materials Already?!?!It seems like I just bought math materials, and I thought they would last a year! (Then again, I did get a late start on presenting some of those works.) I'm getting ready to present the Tens Board, which leads in to counting to 100 using the boards. My MBH album has "Linear Counting: 1,000 and 100 Chains" listed as the next presentation. It seems to me that the 100 Board would be in there somewhere too, but neither Gettman nor MBH list it. We could probably be working on these for two months or so. In any case, I don't have either of these materials, so I'm going to have to make another order!

Time to make sure I have a better understanding of the math periods before I make this order. Last time I didn't understand how they overlapped. I think I'll make a separate post dedicated to that! At least this time I feel as though I am committed to the Montessori approach to math, so I feel more comfortable about making a bigger purchase :)

Melhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-63368745387598975402013-11-20T04:20:00.002-08:002013-11-20T04:20:52.770-08:00(Forced) Progress!Link is finally making some progress with the teen boards and beads! He does fuss about it every time we do it, which is not ideal. One thing I've always liked about Montessori is that it fosters self motivation and self-directed learning. This just isn't happening in our house though. I have to choose the work and I have to tell Link that he has to finish it. Usually that means I say "we can't do any other fun things until you have finished your school work." I only require two works every day! I alternate between the Collective Exercises and the Teen Boards with Beads for math. Then we do at least one lesson from Logic of English. Link enjoys the lessons and sometimes we do more than one.

He is (in my inexperienced opinion) doing well with reading. He is slowly starting to differentiate p, b, and d. He can read cvc words, and words with blends like bl, gr, sl, tr. We haven't learned ch, sh or that type of blend yet. He is still at the point where he has to say each sound, then think about what the word is with the sounds blended together. So I try to get him to practice as much as possible. Soon I think I'll start doing some matching activities with pictures. Next week he gets his first LoE reader and he is very excited. The first readers he will actually "build." They have the words and pictures separate and he can cut and glue them in. I actually laminated the first one and put velcro on the pictures so that he could take them on and off. After that one I'll just let him cut and paste. So they are pretty much matching exercises, but in a book format to make it extra special :) He is writing well in cursive too!

Bumblebee manages to keep himself pretty busy while I'm working with Link. I just put some toys in the room for Beya, and Bumblebee spent the entire time yesterday playing with those.

He knows most of his letters already, but cannot blend words. So I work on sound sorts with him. He's also working on the number rods and cards right now too. Sometimes he'll choose the number spindles or some other work as well. Sometimes we plays letter games with me and Link.

Beya isn't joining us in the school room much. But if we aren't finished with our two works when he wakes up, I am now letting him come in. I used to just stop and leave when he woke up, which was a little disruptive.

So what about music, geography, botany, zoology and all those other great Montessori subjects? We get to those when I get around to putting something new on the shelf :) Otherwise, we do a little of those when we go on walks or are hanging around the house!
I noticed over at What DID We Do All Day that MBT is going through a writing bootcamp with Me Too, and then I read her comments here. I was surprised to see that we had similar reasons for purchasing curriculum to supplement. She used Handwriting Without Tears, All about Spelling and Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. Since I'm <strike>lazy</strike> resourceful I decided to also use HWT and OPG to supplement. However, I found that I wasn't able to put lessons together efficiently enough to keep forward momentum. Thats where Logic of English helped me so much. We are doing the Foundations Level A book right now.

Instead of having two or three books to pull from and create activities, it instead gives you prepared lessons that integrate all three areas - reading, writing and spelling. I did NOT want a traditional workbook, as Link is usually not interested. There is a workbook, but it is not something that he does on his own. Rather it is an aid that he uses while we do the activities together. Each lesson has maybe one or two pages that we use for phonics and one page to practice his writing. (In case you are wondering, the OPG does have lessons, we just weren't crazy about them.) I will still use HWT, because I do want him to learn print too.

The main thing I'd like to say about it is that he likes doing it! We still do sound boxes and sound sorts, but I'm not under as much pressure to constantly change those out. I do them when I can. He really only liked doing them because of the Letter Box books anyways. So sometimes we just read those. The lessons are short, but fun. So we are actually progressing! He is reading slightly ahead of the book right now, simply because we learned some of the phonograms using the sound boxes. The LoE curriculum has helped him to make the step from phonograms to blending words.

He is also especially interested in the writing part because we are doing cursive. Link has a terrible time with letter reversals and I'm hoping this will help. He learned to write some letters in preschool, but they were terrible. He writes so much better in cursive!!

The biggest negative, is that it is pretty expensive when you see that you'll have to buy four levels to get through 2nd grade. It'll end up costing almost $300.

I'll probably do the Advanced Schedule with Bumblebee next year, when he turns 4. He joins us sometimes, but isn't ready to start yet. He's doing the sound boxes and sorts right now. He probably knows his letters better than Link. Link may get through Level C this year, it just depends on how well I do at keeping our routine going. We do one lesson a day, 3-4 times a week. We still have 30 weeks left in the school year right now. Somehow, in 7 weeks, we have only done 13 lessons :) Not a good record, but for a while we were only doing sound boxes.

As a side note, you should check out all their FREE paper! They have such a variety and in the past I have had such a hard time finding the different types. They also have all the spelling rules and phonograms in a nice list.

Melhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-51009831236527575442013-11-07T06:33:00.000-08:002013-11-07T06:35:35.640-08:00"It's Too Hard!" says LinkI have been working with Link all week on the teen beads, really! Link just has a hard time remembering the names of 11, 12, 13, and 15. We've taken the "three period lesson" to the "100 period lesson." We can do it 10 times; the first 9 times he'll get all three correct, then the 10th time, he'll tell me something different! If we keep going he starts saying "I hate school" or "this is too hard!" A few times I've told him, "Just do it a few more times and we'll stop" but the last few times I just put it away. He seems to be able to point to the right number when I say the name, but remembering the name is very hard for him. He does the first correctly 99% of the time, the latter only 75% of the time. I should also mention that even though he has been counting for some time now, if I ask him to identify "6" he'll say "1,2,3,4,5,6 its 6!" Like he just can't recall the word "six" without counting it out. He does the same thing with "9."

I re-checked Meg's albums (from Montessori By Hand) to be sure he has progressed far enough to be doing this work. She says "The child should be comfortable reading numbers the other way, specifying the categories." We've gotten through dynamic addition and he seems very comfortable with that work. She also says "Many children skip a teen when counting. They often skip 13 and a 17 or 18. " Haha, Link counts 11,12,13,17 :) And "11, 12 and 13 are the most difficult because we don’t say oneteen or twoteen. The child can’t use the
language she already knows to fill it in." No kidding! Link can come up with the word "eleven" if he counts all the way through one to eleven. I try to get him to just see it and say the word, but he can't. (He can look at the color beads and identify 1-5 by sight, but not 11-15)

So what do I do? Hold him here until he gets it right? Maybe I'll move on to the teen boards and see how he does. Then let him match them. Maybe that will help him. Melhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08921408433440383571noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8446988311838269188.post-21111879422058754112013-10-29T17:48:00.001-07:002013-10-29T17:48:46.060-07:00School Day - New Math! This weekend as I was preparing to present a new math lesson to Link, I realized that I needed to get Bumblebee going on math! I used to have all kinds of things on the shelves - pink tower, brown stair, red rods, cylinder blocks - but I had to put them all up because Bumblebee was constantly making huge messes out of them. But, he's ready to get presentations on these things, so I have to make room again!

Today I first attempted to give Link a presentation on the teens using the bead stair. Right now he counts like this - 11,12,13,17,18,19,20. He's very consistent, he always counts this way. So I was trying to be very careful in this presentation so that he would learn it correctly. After I presented 11, 12, and 13, he said "Can we stop this now?"

So then I gave Bumblebee (who is 3 1/2) a presentation on the number rods. He can already count pretty well to 10, don't ask me how. This ended up being just the right difficulty for him. He did not get it right the first time. He had to move a few and fill in some spots, but he ended up getting it right in the end. He was very enthusiastic and put it away when he was finished.

After that Link asked for a presentation on the number cards and counters. I knew this would be an easy work for him, but he asked, which was great! I wanted to use that time to talk about odd and even anyways, and it was good for Bumblebee to watch.

Bumblebee was disappointed that he was not actually given a presentation and allowed to work with the counters. I'm pretty sure he isn't quite ready. He really, really wanted me to give him a presentation that involved beads. So instead of the counters, I gave him a presentation on matching the bead stairs to number cards. He did pretty well up to 3, but when he couldn't immediately tell which was 4 without counting, he started messing around. Probably not ready for that one either. Maybe counters would have been better after all :)

After that I could not convince Link to choose any more work as he was complaining about being hungry. Bumblebee, on the other hand, chose to work with the geometric shapes for quite a while, building rockets I believe, but I was okay with that. I went upstairs to make Link lunch and heard some bells ringing randomly as well.

That pretty much wrapped up our school "day" and only lasted about an hour. After that my Aunt read probably every single letter book from the Sound Box Series. I'll call that phonics for the day :)

It shouldn't be that hard. Really. But I tell myself, "I'm not a teacher by training, I'm not used to this sort of thing. " Sometimes that makes me feel better, sometimes.

I have a manual. It's pretty good. It tells me what to do and when. For some reason I am finding that its not enough.

I'm reading these posts and thinking, why don't I know more about this?!

Chains

I chose these because they either organize the primary math sequence or are referencing something from about a year ago, which is about where we should be. We are not where we should be, probably because I'm not introducing the works correctly.

So MBT teacher organizes math into threads:

I divided the math up into what I call "threads." My threads are: linear counting, operations, memorization, fractions, and story problems/equation formats. By the third year of primary the boys do 3-4 math works daily, each work from a different thread. So, we don't get to every thread every day but we do get to every thread every week....Me Too is further behind him in the sequence. So, on Monday he would choose counting a bead chain (linear counting. spindle boxes, 100 board, teen boards, etc., are past works in this category), golden beads (operations), subtraction snake game (memorization). On Tuesday Me Too might choose the subtraction finger board (memorization), counting a bead chain, and a packet of story problems. He has not started fractions yet (he did the typical primary work, but I waited to start fraction equations until elementary).

We are even farther behind, since we are just doing the collective exercises. But in this post, Me Too is still working on static division with the golden beads. So, it seems like he has been doing the later collective exercises for some time. (I don't want anyone to think I'm comparing my kids to other kids. Its not that. I'm just using other kids as a rough guide to figure out where I should be heading.)

In the free Montessori By Hand album that I use it says to wait to do the Teens and Tens until we are into the collective exercises a bit. I would not say that we are since we've only just done addition. So I feel like I'm stuck with only the addition collective exercise. Should I also be on some other thread?

My other big problem - setting the work up so that it can be done independently. Shoot, I can't get him to do it with me, much less without me!

**Edited to Add**
I'm thinking of buying the Montessori R&D album or the Keys of the Universe album, hoping one has more information than my Montessori By Hand album. Can anyone who has any of these say if that would be helpful or not?

**Edited Again to Add**
Ok, I'm starting to get see my problem - I'm just slow :) I am not into the collective exercises much, but Link is still ready to start the "Linear Counting" thread (or Group 3 from MBH). First that means the Short Bead Stair. Link was probably ready for this a long time ago, but I've been holding off because I haven't gotten far into the collective exercises (which is my fault for having a hard time presenting them.) I got some help from MBT that should make this go better. She left a great comment on how she does these exercises with one child.

I feel like we're pushing it just doing it one time! We made three people with me, Link and Bumblebee. When we did static addition, Link was like "Yeah yeah, we added them up, is that it?" So are there any variations I can do to encourage him practice this? Or should I just move on?

I also felt like it was rather cumbersome to have all those number cards out! We didn't do one large set and three small ones. I just did one large and one small, and chose the numbers carefully.

On Monday's we go to Classical Conversations. Link does not participate in the memory work (I figured he wouldn't) but he does like doing art and playing with his classmates after lunch. He participates in the map games, but I'm not sure how much he is picking up. You may wonder why we are still doing it if he's not actually doing the memory work. I think there are other things that he's picking up, soft skills I guess you'd say. The kids all do a little presentation during snack. He's gradually getting comfortable enough to speak. At first he would tell me what to say and I would tell his class. After about four times, he actually spoke himself with me right beside him. Then he turned to me and said "that wasn't that hard!" His presentation consisted of about five sentences and answering a few leading questions from his tutor. He's learning to listen to his classmates and ask questions about their presentations. His favorite part is eating lunch and playing afterwards. I think of it like a really big play date :) He needs the interaction with other kids and I have a hard time providing that.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we are at home. My main goal for those days is to do some kind of phonics and math. If we manage more, that's great, but I try to make that my minimum. We alternate between doing Montessori sound boxes and Happy Phonics games. I thought it was funny that most of the beginning suggestions for learning the sounds in Happy Phonics were all Montessori activities. So we were already doing those. Happy Phonics just provides some games that we can play too. For math, we have been doing the Bank Game and the Exchange Game with our Montessori golden beads. I found this post about combining Montessori math exercises and it really hit home with me. Link was getting burnt out doing things over and over, but he really needs more practice. Switching things up a bit and adding dice helped for a little while. Then we had to take a break. He is still having a hard time understanding what exactly happens with the magic slide and has to have the number broken down. I know he needs more practice so I keep holding off on the collective exercises. Unfortunately that means he is loosing interest as he doesn't like doing the same thing for more than a few days.

The extra things that I try to add on those days are where Charlotte Mason comes in :) That means I'm reading some stories, which all the boys love! We are reading the Old Mother West Wind Series by Thornton Burgess and James Herriot's Treasury for Children. We also go on nature walks and sometimes do some journaling. I am occasionally able to throw in some Montessori geography with our land and water forms. That usually ends with the boys making things with clay and playing with water :) The boys were really interested in the map cabinet when we first got it, not so much now. (Very oddly, they also aren't into the bells!)

You would think I'd have plenty of time to do these things every day, but its hard! Little Beya has really thrown a wrench in our day :) He cannot go in the school room anymore because he climbs out of his pack n' play. So the only time we can go there is during his one hour nap. Since we can't get all that we need to get done during that one hour, we do our math and phonics at the kitchen table now.

It also takes up a good bit of our day just trying to get Link to actually work. My hope was that by using Montessori I'd have a very self motivated five year old. I haven't done a very good job of implementing Montessori, so I can not blame the method! Often I have to mention that we can't go to the park or some other fun thing if we haven't finished our work. You may also be wondering why I keep saying "our work" or "I don't have time". Well, that's because I have to do everything with Link. He will not work independently.

Ok, on Friday we do our Charlotte Mason co-op. This is sooooo great! We have about ten families and we do something different every Friday. Yesterday was a field trip day. We visited an apple orchard off the Blue Ridge Parkway and the kids learned about pollination, bees, butterflies and other bugs. They peeled apples, and ate them of course. They sang folk songs and danced (not Link, but the others did.) Then they went on a storytelling hayride (minus the hay). After that we explored Linville Caverns. On other Fridays we meet at a local park and alternate between the other CM subjects - Nature Study, Art/handicrafts and Artist Study, and Enrichment which includes hymns, poetry, composer study and recitation. Our families total to about 30 people, with the kids ages ranging from 15 months to about 13 years old. This has been such a great experience for us. I get to hang out with adults and all my boys have some kids to play with! The older kids are a great example for Link!

So that's our week. I don't blog much about what we are doing because there really isn't much that is new. I will however, wrap up this very wordy post with some pictures from our co-op field trip :)
I really thought all this time that if I had great activities on the shelves that Link would be drawn to them. And if he wasn't, then getting the work out myself or inviting him to work with me would work. But for some reason he has decided that he does not like anything to do with school. Bumblebee is definitely learning in the school room, Link not so much.

So I've backed off, a little. We go for a walk in the morning. We read lots of stories. I try to sneak in phonics games. Sometimes he'll do some math, but not the three days a week I was shooting for.

We go to Classical Conversations once a week. Though honestly, as a play date more than anything. We join a Charlotte Mason (CM) group once a week. We are using Montessori for phonics, math, and geography/cultural studies. We use CM for things like cultural, nature, artist and composer studies. Which, at five years old, means we read stories like Old Mother West Wind, James Herriot's Treasury for Children, and maybe James Baldwin's 50 Famous Stories.

I am feeling very frustrated with Link right now. Almost to the point where I think "maybe I should just send him to school if he's not going to work with me!"

I have to threaten to put all his Legos up just to get him to work for a little while! I'm tempted to put every toy in the house up, but I think that would just drive me more crazy! I keep saying I'll just give it a little more time, he'll come around. I hope I'm not messing up!

I'm working on continent boxes and just finished up my bells board. I still have a ton of things to cut and laminate too. We've all been unmotivated since our company left. Then Bumblebee decided to fix a broken toy in the school room. Instead he dumped two bottles of glue on the carpet and I had to steam clean. Fun times. Hopefully school will start back up next <strike>week</strike> month!
Now we have to get back in our grove (and I need to get my house cleaned!) I'm also working on getting my bells on the shelf. I am almost finished making the "board" for the bells (out of felt) but I forgot to get black, so I have to go back to the store. I am finding that shelf space is becoming an issue, and I don't even have much out yet. (I cleared the shelves and started fresh.) Each time I think I have a system of organizing the shelves, I have to move something. I'm sure it wreaks havoc on my kids sense of order!

I am also feeling the need to revisit my scope & sequence. I am scared that I'm missing something. I plan on adding a tab for Bumblebee as well since I need to get him started at the beginning. He had gotten so used to seeing the pink tower, red rods, brown stairs, and cylinder blocks that he had a tendency to either ignore them or abuse them. I'm hoping if I wait a while to get them out, they'll be like new again. They weren't out for him before, they were out for Link. You would think that the beginning Montessori works would be less stressful for me, but they aren't! It is almost impossible for me to get a package without the boys knowing and wanting to see what it contains. So, when new school materials arrive they usually help me unpack them. It gives them a chance to handle the material, check it out, and "sensorially explore" it. But I wonder, how much of this "sensorially exploring" should I allow for Bumblebee? I have explained that this particular work is for Link, but he is naturally very curious about it. I wanted to take a nice picture to show off the new material, but I haven't been able to pull him away. As you can see from the pictures above, he is "misusing" the materials but not really "abusing" them.
The things he is doing in the pictures above all seem very innocent. But should I allow it to continue? Check out the video... I was going to stop him here, but then he starting using the hundreds to fill in a hole in the middle of the thousands, and I thought that might be okay. He told his brother, "I'm building squares."

He made a new arrangement, and was very pleased with himself. I showed him how to put them back, and he did for a while, then said "No, I want to stack." He proceeded to stack up all the hundreds that would fit under the shelf. Honestly, he never spent this much time with the pink tower or brown stairs. I guess they weren't new enough. (That's why they are put away for now.)

Re-organizing

In the end he was willing to put them all back right, but had a hard time getting them to fit. With help, he finished up and we went to make donuts!

Soooo, anyone have any thoughts on this? Should I allow him to explore materials as long as he doesn't abuse them?
